Blytheville Hosts MLK Parade/ Talent Show

Blytheville’s MLK Committee held its’ 5th Annual MLK Celebration “We Are One” on Sunday, with a Parade through the city, following a talent show at the Ritz Civic Center.

Blytheville Mayor Melisa Logan explained the rescheduling of the celebration as well as its purpose.

“Our parade was scheduled for January 15th for the celebration of his birth, but due to weather we had to postpone it,” said Logan, “The purpose of this event is to let the town know that we are one. Unity is the best way to solve anything that plagues any community, it is the best way to grow. So today is just a symbol of how it looks when we stand together for a common purpose, and that’s to bring the community together.”

Participants of the parade included former Mayor James Sanders, Blytheville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Sunrise Daycare Learning Center,

Local resident Michelle Sims said, “It’s very important that we not forget the past and continue the legacy that he established for us and not just him all the other civil rights icons and some may not be icons but even those locally our people our parents they may not be icons but they still marched and fought to gain the rights so we have a lot of local people here that have done the same thing.”

I thought that was very important and very good that the city decided to do that and I always want to be a part of something like that because of what was instilled in me when I was growing up.

During the talent show, Logan recognized local matriarchs (80 and over) for their contributions towards the growth of the city, its citizens, and leaders.
